Intuition, Ethics, and Biases

John Ryan

Part A) Hindsight bias-

When watching ESPN the other day, there was a segment on redrafting the NFL draft from 2008 using the information that we have now on the players. By doing this they showed some hindsight bias by using only information on the players they have now, disregarding certain scenarios that wouldn't have happened back in the day.

Part B) By using intuition to answer important moral and ethical decisions, people are able to use their gut feeling on tough decisions while using their prior experience and knowledge while considering theses decisions.

Part C)
In my opinion, knowledge does carry an ethical responsibility because in many cases that knowledge will be good information for other people. One example of knowledge carrying ethical responsibility is when scientists make groundbreaking discoveries. By warning people over the threat of ebola in Africa they are sharing their knowledge with the rest of the people to ensure their safety from the disease, while ensuring steps are taken so it does not spread.

1) With your feedback, I was able to understand the faults in my presentation and tkppd better. This will also give me good insight for the real presentation we will need to do next year. One thing that I need to improve upon was the strength of my topped. Knowing that I could have added more will help me a complete it better next year. I will also be able to focus on explaining the different sides of the real life situation better which will help me for next year as well.

2) I don't have any questions regarding the feedback.

Sentinelese People blog 4

Indigenous Group
Sentinelese People

Here they are pointing their weapons at a helicopter. In this picture, members of the Sentinelese group are startled by an incoming helicopter and rush the beach with weapons to try and fend them off.
Meet the Most Isolated People in the World!

In this picture, a group of people on a boat approach there land and see them dancing.

Sentinelese People PhotosIn the last picture, members of the group are retrieving coconuts thrown to them by outside members outside the tribe trying to offer peace.
The Sentinelese tribe is considered the most isolated tribe in the world as an outside group has only come in contact once in recent years. During these visits the tribe used violent methods to fend them off including throwing spears at a helicopter to keep themselves separated. Since they are so isolated their language and religion are unknown to all. This tribe is located on the Andaman islands inside the bay of Bengal off the coast of Thailand. It is estimated that the tribe has about 250 people but it is also unknown for sure. Many thought the tribe would die off with the increased fishing and exploration around their island but they have held strong throughout the years. The tribe is very basic and is thought to be a hunter-gatherer tribe, as they are good with self made weapons used for obtaining food and fending themselves off. Many believe that the Sentinelese are one of the first human populations to inhabit Africa and have lived among the islands for 60,000 years. This is assumed because their skin is much darker than typical Andaman islanders and their language is much different from any other tribe among the islands.
Sense Perception and the Sentinelese PeopleOne of the ways of knowing the sentinelese people use in order to protect themselves from the outside world, is sense perception. As read above, in the early 2000's, the sentinelese people were approached by a helicopter and responded by collecting there weapons and throwing them at the helicopter to fend it off. This show sens perception because in our culture we view a helicopter as a highly technological way of flying, but in their tribe they view a helicopter as danger.

Before watching the video i knew that Nigeria was a larger country in Africa and was not very wealthy, also i learned in this video that Nigeria's official language is English which is something i would not have assumed. It is important in life to seek out more about people and not rely on one story of a person because you are not able to judge a person based on one of their experiences, however the more you know about a person the more you are able to actually know about them. One time where i saw a culture very different from mine is when my family and i visited St Thomas this past year. Even though the island was beautiful with some of the nicest beaches in the world, it was interesting to see the people who live there and how it is viewed as a "nice inland island", even though it is far different from american culture. Also when i went to Mexico it was a very different experience because there would be people lying on the ground in the middle of the streets or wild dogs running around looking for food which was very weird to see from an American point of view. Living abroad in college would be very cool but also expand my paradigm because i would be able to get a different perspective on a different society and learn a new culture which would help my view of the world outside of America.

A) This picture raises awareness to me why we do TOK because the earth is so big yet in proportion to the rest of space it is almost nothing. This means that in the grand scheme of things that we are just small specks among this big universe that we have been unable to explore. Since we don't know whats really outside of thois planet we are unsure of what else could be out there. This is why i chose this picture, in this galaxy there could be other species or completely different societies but we will never be able to find out because we are just small creatures in the grand scheme of things.

B) One IB learner profile Sturgis could improve upon is the balanced trait. Even though lots of people at Sturgis participate in clubs or sports I feel like lots of time people from Sturgis have is dedicated to studies and this can limit the ability to balance your studies with your outside life. Also people can make freinds here with people who may not live near them, so unless ypou have a car, it is much harder to hang out with friends than with yourfriends at the local public school.
